The epicentre was located between the towns of Sospel and Breil sur Roya, in the Menton area just over 30 kilometres from Nice.

The earthquake took place at 21:14 on Saturday night, and it reached all the way to the centre of Nice. Luckily, due to its moderate nature, there were no personal or material losses.

Alpes-Maritimes is one of the more seismically active regions in France, even if this event concerns a fault that is still not very well-known, according to Bertrand Delouis, researcher at the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis. The same area suffered a 6.5 earthquake in 1887 that caused important material damage.
