Caves of Saint Cezaire, Grasse

Natural rock formations in a subterranean landscape

featured in Sights & sites

The awe-inspiring caves of Saint Cézaire are six million years old. Discovered by a farmer digging his field in 1890, they boast a wealth of beautiful, natural rock formations in fantastical forms.

Once inside, guided from room to room, visitors will discover the spectacular underground landscaped of an imposing world perfectly set off with appropriate, simple lighting. The whole route is perfectly laid out and safe.

At these depths, the extraordinary pinks and purples of the natural columns of rock create a magical atmosphere. The incredible beauty of the setting inspires the imagination, and the rock formations take on the shapes of birds with magnificent plumage, stars, corals, tentacled sea creatures, an astonishing skull and even a skeleton.

Worth knowing

The car park at the site is free and allows you to park just metres from the entrance to the caves.

Who should go

Great family outing as the tour of the caves has been arranged with safety and easy access in mind. Guided tours are available for groups and families. The picnic area and 6 hectares of wooded parkland make this a great place to visit for a day out of Nice.

Visitor comments

  • "The caves itself are wonderful!! But with the added guided tour it makes it complete. We went in with our 1.5 year old. And he really liked it that the tour guide played a special song in the cave (I don't want to spoil everything). I can really recommend this. Also with young children, maybe 1.5 was a bit to young, but nevertheless." - Trip Advisor
  • "Very friendly welcome and fascinating tour very well presented- merci Manon. Excellent value to see a natural wonder, in a lovely part of the countryside." - Trip Advisor
  • "This is a cool activity for the whole family, perfect for hot days because the cave is much cooler (we visited in April, was sunny 23 outside and 15 inside), the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, managed to squeeze a lot of information into the 45 minutes visit, and also managed to flip between English and French. This is a one hour or maybe two hour activity (you can walk around the cave and learn about local trees and fauna), make sure you know the opening hours before you go because out of season it closed for lunch." - Trip Advisor
